6 Asian Romance Dramas I’m Currently Obsessed With

As a romance girly who isn’t always able to scratch that itch with anime (aka why are they never adults?!), I find myself sprinting, no, running, to Asian dramas instead. They hit the perfect balance of story, drama, and romance that puts my heart at ease. I laugh, I cry, I get pissed off (& ready to fight tbh), but underneath all of it, I’m rooting for love every single time. That’s the magic these shows pull off, and it’s exactly why I’m hooked. These six all deliver that feeling, just in their own different ways…(in my opinion)

1. The First Frost

Netflix · Chinese drama (cdrama) · Romance, slow burn
Episodes: 32 · Tags: Second Chance Romance, Slow Burn, Cohabitation, First Love, Past & Present, Family

⚠️ Quick heads up: The First Frost touches on violence and sexual violence.

Synopsis: Two former high school classmates reunite by chance years later and, after some awkward pretending not to recognize each other, end up living together. As old feelings resurface, the drama unpacks how past trauma, longing, and healing shape their second chance at love.

My thoughts: This one is emotionally heavy, so I want to lead with a trigger warning for violence and sexual violence before anything else. It’s a slow burn, but a well-paced one. I found myself invested in Wen Yifan and Sang Yan’s lives even outside the romance, because there’s so much happening underneath the surface. Wen Yifan’s struggles resonated with me more than I expected going in. This isn’t a bubblegum, everything-is-rainbows kind of watch, but it earns every heavy moment. I usually walk away disappointed by how “childhood friends to lovers” gets handled, but this is one of the few times I think the writers actually did it justice and added depth to the story.

2. The Business Proposal

Netflix · Korean drama (kdrama) · Romantic comedy, workplace
Episodes: 12 · Tags: Boss-Employee Relationship, Fake Identity, Contract Relationship, Company President Male Lead, Secondary Couple

Synopsis: A woman agrees to go on a blind date disguised as her friend, purely to scare off the guy her friend’s dad set her up with. The plan backfires spectacularly when her “date” turns out to be the CEO of the company she actually works for, and he’s not scared off at all.

My thoughts: I randomly decided to binge this show on Netflix one day and didn’t regret it (I even got my partner to watch it with me a couple times). The characters are serious, but unserious at the same time, which is exactly what I love about a good workplace romance. This is the kind of show you can rewatch without getting tired of it and I’ve personally watched it three times. Shin Ha-ri and Kang Tae-moo are cute together, but I really loved the dynamic of all of the characters that they introduced in the series. This is the perfect for those looking for a romantic comedy that isnt too heavy or too long of a series.

3. Falling Into Your Smile

Netflix · Chinese drama (cdrama) · E-sports, romance
Episodes: 31 · Tags: Professional Gaming, Bromance, Online Gamer Female Lead, Competition, Teamwork

Synopsis: After graduating college, a talented amateur gamer becomes the first official female player on an all-male professional e-sports team. She has to fight through doubt, sexism, and online backlash to prove herself, all while a bond forms with her team’s cool, capable captain.

My thoughts: E-sports/gaming meets romance? SIGN ME UP! The story follows what it actually looks and feels like to be a woman breaking into an all-male industry. Tong Yao tries to stay focused while dealing with online hate and falling in love with one of her teammates. The story hits on topics that many women gamers, creators, and artists struggle with when growing in male dominated spaces. This is one of many reasons why the story had a refreshing angle compared to a lot of other Asian dramas in this space.

4. Dynamite Kiss

Netflix · Korean drama (kdrama) · Romantic comedy, workplace
Episodes: 14 · Tags: Workplace Romance, Fake Marriage, Misunderstanding, Office Setting, Opposites Attract

Synopsis: A single woman disguises herself as a married mother to land a job at a baby products company, paying off her family’s debt in the process. Things get complicated fast when she falls for her sharp, initially guarded team leader, who has no idea she’s hiding the truth.

My thoughts: The comedy and irony in this one had me from the START. It opens in the most random way possible, then somehow ties itself into the bigger story with real payoff. I never expected to root this hard for a romance built on a single woman pretending to be a married mother just to land a job, but it works. Go Da-rim’s grit and adaptability are what sold me completely. I’m always a sucker for a smart, independent lead, and Gong Ji-hyeok checks the misunderstood-rich-guy box in exactly the way I love.

5. Shine on Me

Netflix · Chinese drama (cdrama) · Workplace romance, slow burn
Episodes: 36 · Tags: Workplace Romance, Unrequited Love, College Crush, Slow Burn, Second Chance

Synopsis: After years spent nursing an unrequited crush in college, a young woman enters the workforce and crosses paths with a former surgeon-turned-colleague. What starts as a rocky first impression slowly turns into an unexpected, grounded connection that helps her finally let go of the past.

My thoughts: I know, I KNOW..another workplace romance? I CLEARLY have a type (although that quest did not work out for me in real life haha). This story feels different and refreshing. We rarely get a wealthy lead who’s this down-to-earth and hardworking. Nie Xiguang’s drive to build her own path, instead of leaning on her family’s money, was such a welcome change. The backstory and the string of misunderstandings keeping her and Lin Yusen apart kept me hooked, and there is so much tea along the way. Another workplace romance, and they get me every single time. I won’t spoil it, but this one takes a turn I didn’t see coming, and their chemistry carries every second of it.

6. Love O2O

Netflix · Chinese drama (cdrama) · College romance, gaming
Episodes: 30 · Tags: Online Gaming, Smart Female Lead, First Love, Instant Attraction, Nice Male Lead

Synopsis: A top computer-science student and online gaming champion gets dumped by her anonymous “in-game husband,” only to be proposed to (in-game) by the server’s number-one player. She soon discovers he’s actually her university senior in real life, and the two fall for each other both online and off.

My thoughts: I LOVE that this one centers around gaming. So many of my closest friendships started online, and this felt like a close mirror to real experiences I’ve had. Bei Weiwei is an absolute badass in the gaming space, and watching her find her person along the way is genuinely satisfying. The story wasn’t solely about her online life, it was also about her real life, real relationships, and real struggles. Her struggle with being stereotyped because of her gender, appearance, and accomplishments hit closer to home than I expected.

At the end of the day, these six proved that a good romance doesn’t need to look the same. Some had me laughing through workplace chaos, some had me aggravated with slow-burn tension, and one genuinely had me in shambles! If you’re looking for your next watch, start wherever your mood is pulling you.
